Sattar Izwaini Profile

Sattar Izwaini earned his PhD in Translation Studies from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), UK. He is a professor of translation studies at the American University of Sharjah, where he teaches Arabic translation and linguistics. He worked as the coordinator of the MA program in translation from 2011-2014. He has taught Arabic, linguistics, and translation in Britain and the Arab World. He has published and given presentations on translation in different venues. His research interests include Arabic linguistics, audiovisual translation, contrastive linguistics, corpus-based translation studies, localization, machine translation, and terminology.

Call for Papers: Journal of Arabic and Diglossia Studies

The Journal of Arabic and Diglossia Studies (JADS) invites submissions for its upcoming issues. JADS is a peer-reviewed scholarly publication that aims to explore and examine the complex relationship between the Arabic language and diglossia, along with their various sociolinguistic, cultural, historical, and pedagogical dimensions.

We welcome original research articles and book reviews that address topics related to Arabic/diglossia and its broader implications. The journal encourages interdisciplinary approaches and methodologies that shed light on the intricacies of Arabic language use, teaching, learning, and communication in diverse contexts.

Some possible areas of investigation include but are not limited to:

  • Language contact and code-switching in Arabic diglossic settings
  • Sociolinguistics of Arabic language use in different regions and communities
  • Historical development and evolution of Arabic dialects and their impact on diglossia
  • Pedagogy and teaching methods for Arabic as a first or second language
  • Technology-enhanced learning and teaching of Arabic in multilingual contexts
  • Discourse analysis and pragmatics of Arabic language use in various genres and registers
  • Lexical and grammatical features of Arabic dialects and their interface with Standard Arabic
  • Language policy and planning for Arabic education in multilingual societies
  • Translation and interpretation studies involving Arabic and diglossic languages
  • Intersections of Arabic/diglossia with gender, religion, identity, and power dynamics

Complete instructions for preparing and submitting your manuscript to the Journal of Arabic and Diglossia Studies are outlined below. Please adhere to these guidelines when preparing your submission.

Submission Conditions

The Journal of Arabic and Diglossia Studies accepts manuscripts under the following conditions:

  • Original Work: The manuscript must be your original work and should not replicate any previously published material, including your own work.

  • Exclusivity: The manuscript should be submitted solely to the Journal of Arabic and Diglossia It should not be under consideration, undergoing peer review, accepted for publication, in press, or published elsewhere.

  • Ethical Standards: The manuscript should not contain any content that is abusive, defamatory, libelous, obscene, fraudulent, or illegal.

By submitting your manuscript to the Journal of Arabic and Diglossia Studies, you consent to any necessary originality checks conducted during the peer-review and production processes.

Manuscript Preparation

1.    General Guidelines

  • Manuscripts should be in English, with flexibility in spelling and punctuation styles. Double quotation marks should be used, except for quotations "within" quotations. Long quotations of 40 words or more should be indented without quotation marks.

  • A typical manuscript ranges from 5,000 to 7,000 words, including tables, references, captions, and footnotes. Manuscripts exceeding this limit will undergo critical review for length.

  • Manuscripts should be structured as follows: title page, abstract, keywords, main text, acknowledgments, references, and appendices (if applicable).

  • All manuscripts must include an abstract of 150 words and five keywords.

  • Section headings should be concise.

  • Authors should provide their full names, affiliations, and email addresses on the cover page. One author should be designated as the corresponding author. If co-authors change affiliations during the peer-review process, this can be noted as a footnote. No changes to affiliation can be made after acceptance. The corresponding author's email address may be displayed in PDF and online articles.

  • All individuals reasonably claiming authorship must be listed as co-authors. All co-authors must authorize the corresponding author to act on their behalf in all publication-related matters, and the order of author names should be mutually agreed upon.

  • Authors should provide funding and grant details in the Acknowledgment section on the title For single agency grants, specify: "This work was supported by the [Funding Agency] under Grant [number xxxx]." For multiple agency grants: "This work was supported by [Funding Agency 1] under Grant [number xxxx]; [Funding Agency 2] under Grant [number xxxx]; and [Funding Agency 3] under Grant [number xxxx]."

  • Authors should include a Disclosure Statement acknowledging any conflict of interest, financial interest, or benefit arising from the direct applications of their research.

  • Non-discriminatory language is mandatory in all manuscripts, and sexist or racist terms must be avoided.

  • When using proprietary terms or trademarks, authors must include the symbols ® or TM.

2.    Style Guidelines

  • Original Research Papers: Introduction, Theoretical Framework, Methodology, Results, Discussion/Concluding Remarks (For qualitative studies, include sections 1, 2, and 5).

  • Book Reviews: Introduction, Chapter I, Chapter II, Last Section: Concluding Remarks.

  • Level I headings: Bold font, Tw Cen MT 12

  • Level II headings: Bold font, Tw Cen MT 11

  • Level III headings: Italic font, Tw Cen MT 11

·         Margins

  • 1inch (2.54 cm) on all sides

3.    Figures & Tables

  • Provide figures in the highest quality format Figures and graphics should meet these resolutions:

  • Minimum 1200 dpi for line art

  • Minimum 600 dpi for greyscale

  • Minimum 300 dpi for color

  • Embed figures and tables within the manuscript file.

  • Save figures in formats like TIFF, PostScript, or EPS, including all necessary font information and source files.

Manuscript Submission

  • Include a 'cover page' with your full name, institutional and email address, telephone number, and a biographical note separately from the main manuscript file.

  • Submit the manuscript in a WORD file (formats .doc or .docx), including the full title, abstract, figures, tables, and appendices.

Peer Review Policy

The Journal of Arabic and Diglossia Studies employs a double-blind review policy, ensuring anonymity between reviewers and authors.

Proof of Acceptance

After acceptance, the corresponding author will receive an email PDF of the proofs.
