A Multilevel Analysis of Registered Sex Offender Violation Status: The Role of Neighborhood Disadvantage and Social Services DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.6000/1929-4409.2015.04.01 Published: 07 January 2015 |
Abstract: This research attempted to clarify the determinants of registered sex offender violations using individual-level and contextual characteristics under social disorganization theory. Data on registered sex offenders in Fresno County, CA and census data were analyzed to examine the influences of offender characteristics, neighborhood disadvantage, and accessibility to social services on violation risks. Multilevel logistic regression models indicated that those offenders living in disadvantaged neighborhoods faced a higher risk of registration violations, while such an effect was mitigated by the accessibility to social services. Based on the findings, policy implications of social services as a protective factor and strategic management of the registration policies were discussed. Keywords: Registered sex offenders, neighborhoods, spatial analysis.Download Full Article |

Abstract: The article deals with a study of the destructive motivation of public servants on the example of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The study was conducted from 2015 to 2018. The purpose of study was to determine what factors are demotivating for civil servants. The research method was the questionnaire method based on a stratified quota sample. It has been proven that this type of motivation in governmental bodies is primarily caused by the employees’ disappointment in expectations. Public service is attractive mainly due to the stability of employment and the high social status of an official. However, public servants have to deal with a lack of real power, a high level of stress, and work intensity. Also, the respondents consider their income as inadequate to their work and social status. As a result, employees tend to minimize their labor costs, and destructive motivation appears. The practice of personnel management applies several measures to eliminate this phenomenon, but not all of them can be implemented for the public service. The authors regard the following means as the most effective ones, namely: the improvement of labor organization, the automatization of routine operations, personal responsibility increase, and the development of decision-making discretion. Keywords: Motivation, demotivation, destructive motivation, deviation, anomie, public service. |
A Society that Counts to Two Again - Pages 2316-2319 Nataliia O. Khazieva DOI: https://doi.org/10.6000/1929-4409.2020.09.277 Published: 29 December 2020 |
Abstract: The place of research object will be taken by the digital society and man belonging to this era. Between the researcher and the object under study (digital society, modern man) there will be a prism through which it will be possible to consider the problems of interest to us and we will be able to discern the prism of research better. This position of the observer, as well as the means and methods of observation, will help us look differently at the object of our interest: changes in a society driven by digitalization, the role of numbers in modern society, and the updated properties of a digit. A Three-dimensional Perspective on Wrongful Convictions in Israel: Organizational-Forensic, Psychosocial and Practical DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.6000/1929-4409.2015.04.16 Published: 18 August 2015 |
Abstract: It is difficult to find an injustice committed against the citizen by the state that is greater than the conviction of an innocent person. At this stage, it may be tentatively stated that the phenomenon is not insignificant. This theoretical article describes the various aspects of the criminal justice system associated with the undesirable outcome of wrongful convictions. The paper reviews a series of organizational and forensic aspects that could bring about a bias in investigation of the legal truth. Furthermore, a number of psychosocial aspects relating to wrongful convictions, followed by practical aspects are described and discussed. It appears that on the practical level the phenomenon cries out for changes in the law enforcement system (e.g. implementation of the US Innocence Project or the biometric databank) and the need for empirical investigation. It appears that there is still a long way to go before a full understanding can be obtained of wrongful convictions and their prevention. One way or another, the authors are of the opinion that greater academic and public importance should be assigned to the question of wrongful convictions and perhaps turn the issue of truth and falsehood in criminal law into a theoretical and research field in its own right. Keywords: Wrongful conviction, criminal justice system, innocent people, false confessions.Download Full Article |
